Governor Lee signs Bills to boost efforts in solid waste management, conservation of natural resources and mitigating climate change effects
The County Government of Nakuru has started the journey towards effective response, appropriate adaptation and mitigation of climate change effects after Governor Lee Kinyanjui assented to the Nakuru County Climate Change Bill 2020.
The Bill was sponsored at the County Assembly by Hon. Joseph Kamano, MCA Maiella ward, and who is also the Chairman of the Sectoral Committee in Water, Sanitation, Environment, Energy and Natural Resources at the County Assembly.
Governor Kinyanjui also assented to the Nakuru County Water and Sanitation Services Bill, 2020 which was sponsored at the County Assembly by Hon. Philip Wanjohi, MCA Lare Ward and the Nakuru County Waste Management Bill, 2020 which was sponsored by Hon. Elizabeth Gichuki, Nominated MCA Menengai West.
According to the County Boss, the three acts will boost efforts in solid waste management, conservation of natural resources and mitigating climate change effects in Nakuru County.
“As a County, we strive to take Nakuru Municipality and other urban centres back to their glory of the cleanest urban centres in the region. Let us take personal responsibility for keeping the town clean,” the Governor stated.
The Acts will also create legal frameworks for public-private partnerships and allow access to funds set aside for climate change mitigation, effective waste management and enhance sustainable water and sanitation practices within the County.
The Nakuru County Climate Change Bill, 2020 will put in place the framework and mechanisms on how to bring together all relevant stakeholders in responding effectively to climate change.
The Nakuru County Water and Sanitation Services Bill, 2020 seeks to provide a legal framework to guide water and sanitation service providers and to develop, regulate and manage county public works related to the provision of water and sanitation services, stormwater management systems, water conservation, water harvesting and other connectivity.
The Nakuru County Waste Management Bill, 2020 will put in place a framework for sustainable, effective and efficient waste management within the county. It will also provide structures for both solid and liquid waste management.
The Governor further noted that a recent report from KMFRI indicated that the fish in Lake Nakuru may have heavy metals due to pollution.
“In partnership with NEMA, we are working on an audit framework to ensure zero hazardous emissions from our industries,” he said.
Speaking during the signing, Water and Environment CEC Eng. Festus Ng’eno noted that this was a milestone and a game-changer for the water, sanitation and environment sector.
