Governor Lee urges National Government to lift ban on logging
Nakuru Governor H.E Lee Kinyanjui has called for the lifting of the ban on logging in public and community forests as it is hurting local investors.
The Governor said the ban, which was imposed last year, has led to job losses as companies downsize due to lack of timber.
Speaking in Elburgon, Molo Sub County, after laying the foundation for the expansion of the maternity wing of the Elburgon Hospital, the Governor said the town had been adversely affected by the ban.
He said the national Government should immediately lift the moratorium and come up with a reforestation programme to improve the forest cover.
“If it is about reclaiming our forests then we should initiate a tree-planting programme and lift the ban as it is proving detrimental and leading to job losses,” the Governor said
He reiterated his administration is committed to improving health services across the County and ensure residents have access to comprehensive and affordable health care.
He said; In order to avail quality health services we have ensured all our health centres are well equipped and have adequate drugs
The Governor noted that due to improved medical services in health centres, the number of patients seeking referral services outside the County has decreased by 60 per cent.
He said the increased consumption of illicit brews in Elburgon and Molo is a major concern as it threatens to destroy the future of the young generation.
“As a County, we will cancel the licenses of bar owners and traders involved in the sale of the lethal brews,” he added
He announced that as Nakuru town inches closer to City status plans are underway to upgrade Molo and Gilgil towns to Municipalities.
The elevation of the two towns will ensure they attract more funding to improve infrastructure and afford residents a better quality of life.
Molo MP Kuria Kimani who joined the Governor said he is fully behind the elevation of Nakuru into a City before the end of the year.
The Governor was accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr.Eric Korir, County Secretary Mr.Benjamin Njoroge and CECMs Kariuki Gichuki, Dr Peter Ketyenya, Lucy Kariuki, Mwangangi Mwania and Chief of Staff Njoroge Gichuhi.
