Public Participation on the Built Environment Bill

Residents of Nakuru County today had an opportunity to air their views on the Built Environment Bill during a public participation forum at Stem Hotel.

C.E.C.M in charge of Lands, Housing and Physical Planning, Mr. Francis Mwangi said that the County Government was supporting the Bill since the current legislation was enacted in 1968 and is therefore outdated.

He encouraged the public to share their views and ask questions where necessary in regards to the Bill since it’s implementation will affect Nakuru greatly as the town gears for City Status.

Comprehensive consultations, the CECM noted, will help in the improvement of the draft Bill.

National Building Inspectorate Secretary, Moses Nyakiongora said that the Bill seeks to have a comprehensive overview of the building control process with a clear delineation of the roles of the two levels of Government.

“The Bill also outlines the legal mandate of the County Government in building control and provide a provision to build the capacity of the County Governments to enforce the National Building Regulations through standards, technical assistance, and training,” he added

The public participation session was conducted in conjunction with Narok, Kajiado, Kericho, Bomet and Laikipia Counties where participants were asked to get a copy of the draft Bill and encouraged to send their views to www.publicworks.go.ke or call 0726123123 for enquiries

Also present was the Nakuru County Attorney, Caleb Nyamwange and the Speaker of the County Assembly of Nakuru Joel Kairu.
